City Technology NO sensors to benefit 'blue babies'

Critically-ill newborn babies will benefit from the administration of nitric oxide inhalation therapy, thanks to world-leading NO gas sensors from City Technology Limited in the UK.

Specially-developed for the medical market, these sensors have been crucial in bringing this therapy to neonatal medicine, which stands to benefit thousands of babies worldwide. NO therapy has become one of the most exciting research areas in ventilator therapy since the discovery of NO as an extremely effective pulmonary vasodilator. NO inhalation therapy reduces the 'blue babies'' need for invasive surgery and is being greeted as one of the most important breakthroughs in this area for many years.

The USA Food & Drug Administration has approved this therapy for use in the treatment of neonates with 'blue baby syndrome', or hypoxic respiratory failure, after several years of clinical trials. City Technology sensors used in the early trials period have enabled City to develop a superior design, dedicated medical product. These sensors are now being used in equipment manufactured by Siemens, Messer Griesheim and many others including AGA Europe.

These new sensors, the MN0-1 and the compact MNO-2, offer superior performance with no cross-interference from agent gases or N2O. They boast fast T90 response times of less than 10 seconds and temperature compensation. They are both totally unaffected by operation in 100% O2.

Within neonatal critical care areas, sensor reliability is crucial for patient well being, care delivery and keeping downtime of care facilities to a minimum. City operates stringent quality control and rigorous testing procedures within their production facility in Portsmouth, UK and has recently received ISO9001 and EN46001 quality accreditation. The production processes for the MNO sensors are performed by a dedicated team, and incorporate automatic checks such that each stage cannot be carried out unless the previous stage was 100% correct.

David Baines, Director - Medical Applications: 'This approval from the FDA is really great news for us and will be of huge benefit to neonatal clinicians. These new sensors are just one example of City's ability and willingness to co-develop customised products, and we are geared up for a major surge in demand from medical device OEMs in the coming months.'
